My Father

To Ah Suk and Kong Kong.
Happy Father's Day.

We siblings address him as "Ah Suk" because he's the second son in the home. This is typical Hakka culture; we are told. Sometimes people ask us why we call him that and not papa. But whether it is this or that he is our dear father.
Last weekend he was here for a Hakka Association Annual gathering; he being the head in the Muar Branch. At his age, we thought it could be taking a toll on him but he said the members find him reliable and accountable for decisions. So, he is trusted by many even in his nineties. That's what I learn from him; reliability.
Next, we like to hang around him as he can be humorous and fun. His stand of living each day for itself make him less grumpy and you do not mind  hanging around him. So, I must emulate him so that my children will enjoy me too; don't be naggy.
He reads widely; is informative and talks about world affairs intelligently; that I have to really pick up. He is interesting as he dwells on issues both in the local and international scenes. Sometimes I go ...yes,yes,yes but do not know as much as him. I promise to cover as much as I can.
He is thrifty, careful and diligent. He does not rest on his laurels and makes himself useful. Though slower when compared to his younger days, he is nevertheless still keen in keeping his trade for his living. He is never found to be lazy. That, I surely must follow.
He often tells my siblings and I that the early bird catches the worm and never believes in getting up late. He says one should get up on time and go to bed on time; not like what youths do these days. I follow his instructions well; go to bed early and get up early for work.
My father teaches us many values and skills just by the way he lives.
His generosity is real and his love for us even more real.
I thank God for my earthly father for in him I surely can see a little of my Heavenly Father.

May my father continue to reap the blessings of an easy life and enjoy his golden days.
Happy Father's Day; Kong Kong.
